A Mainstream-y Monday
There's been a lot of new-ish acts coming out with albums since the start of 2007 that have a distinct 80's U.K. feel to them. Of course when your band is influenced by The Cure, Television and The Smiths, it's understandable why you might channel pieces of that sound into your own music. Coming straight out of Glasgow, Scotland too really probably has an effect too. And so I'm proud to present The Cinematics. As I listen to their upcoming debut album "Strange Education" (out March 6th on TVT Records), not only do I hear The Cure and The Smiths but also U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, Franz Ferdinand and Interpol. The somewhat surprising thing is that The Cinematics actually pull off a combination of these sounds without barely a hitch. That is, I'm impressed at how good this album sounds considering nothing on it is particularly original. I can understand how people will denounce the band for making music that all seems done before. My argument is that it takes a certain kind of talent to be able to imitate a group of classic bands and still hold your own right next to them.Fact of the matter is that "Strange Education" is probably a better album than Franz's "You Could Have It So Much Better..." or We Are Scientists' "With Love and Squalor," and it may even outdo Editors' debut "The Back Room." It's no "Joshua Tree" or "Disintegration," nor is it as good as "Turn on the Bright Lights," but this album does leave you with a smile on your face and a set of hooks in your head. I can just smell the radio play coming because this band is so marketable, but something about their music completely grabs me and engages my ears in a lovely listening experience. So much so that I really felt the need to tell you about the band. If you're a complete sucker for commercially viable indie rock, The Cinematics will be your new favorite band.

Thank goodness I have read a crit that I agree with regarding The Cinematics, you have them spot on.
But to appreciate this band you must experience them live - they dont have to jump about the stage like lunatics or have purple hair -they just play music that grabs you and leaves you stunned by the end of their set - they are the tightest most accomplished band I have heard in a long time - they have everything and the most amazing thing is that this is just the beginning!!! Embronic in fact GO SEE THEM LIVE!!!!
Comparisons are the last refuge of the untalented music journalist!
Poor Average music Journalists will find it hard to write a quick report without comparisons to other bands and being so damn good and with so many influences the majority of music journalists wont be able to pigeon hole them.
With Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) Seth (My Vitriol)and a host of other big names backing you it looks like the music press might be a bit late to jump on the "I heard it first" bandwagon.
To quote the lyrics of their song the Chase
"If you dont make a move to soon, were gonna steal it from under you"
They may be "staring at the stars", but the Cinematics certainly have the right to be looking in that direction.
Spread the word!

i don't care how well or how poorly one writes... i prefer being told what bands a band is similar to so i know whether or not to even waste my time.
