Work Hard, Die Hard (With A Vengeance)

Let me sum this up for you right quick: sometimes working a full time job can be quite the frustrating experience. This is especially true when your boss demands that instead of working 8 hours a day like a normal person that you work 16 hours instead. And so, welcome to what will be my life for the next 2 weeks. I now have 8 hours a day for sleeping, eating, and driving to and from work. It sucks like you wouldn't believe. My ability to keep up with pop culture and such has now become sharply dimished, along with my blogging capabilities. Thankfully it's only for 2 weeks and not longer. At the same time, I'm not going to just altogether give up on blogging for the next two weeks. I just want to give you an excuse as to why I might not be posting so much for the next 14 days or so. I'd like to thank you in advance for your patience, and realize that I'm doing everything in my power to keep this thing updated with some great new music for the next couple weeks.

Now that the bases are covered, today was a huge beast for me that I will not soon forget. I don't think I've worked this hard in a long, long time...maybe ever. Because I don't have time for a proper write up, I thought I'd give you a couple songs by artists you should be quite familiar with. Plenty of new releases by dead people this month, and I'm a little surprised there's not a new Tupac album coming out. But May 8th is the release of Elliott Smith's 2-disc rarities collection, titled "New Moon." For the Elliott Smith completist, this is a must-own. I'm surprised at how good most of these songs sound considered how they were recorded and under what conditions. Elliott Smith's true passion and emotion lie in the stripped down versions of these (mostly) unreleased songs, and he was done a great justice when the label decided to leave everything pretty much intact from the original recordings.

The Jeff Buckley retrospective, simply titled "So Real: The Songs of Jeff Buckley," comes out on May 22nd and offers less in the way of new material and more in the way of alternate takes and live stuff. You can find a good portion of this on the 2-disc version of "Grace" that was released a couple years ago, but this CD is worth your money simply because of the few true gems it offers from Buckley that you can't get anywhere else. Case in point: this Smiths cover, which was recorded during a radio session but never played over the air.

Cheers for the mp3 of Jeff Buckley covering "I Know It's Over". The Smiths are one of my favourite bands, and Buckley was one of the great interpreters of other people's songs, not to mention a great writer in his own right.

Great post. Thanks for providing the MP3 for "I Know It's Over", it's a consistent cover that I happen to enjoy even more than the original. However, I do think it was available on Buckley's posthumous release, "Mystery White Boy", as well. I hotlinked the MP3 in one of my own blog entries (http://www.passthemusic.blogspot.com), and can take it down if you'd like me to. Just let me know. Thanks again, I appreciate all of your posts.
