Built on Sass
Yep, I named Kate Nash's song "Foundations" as one of my favorite songs of 2007. We're now in 2008, and her debut record "Made of Bricks" arrived on U.S. shores yesterday. It's been out everywhere else for a little while now, but like a few recent U.K. imports (see: Lily Allen) it often takes awhile for these things to get to America. I'm just glad it's here. A lot of talk has been made comparing Kate Nash with Lily Allen, in that both women are very sassy pop stars who aren't afraid to speak their minds (i.e. trash the people who deserve trashing, which is boys most of the time). But I know that Kate really dislikes the Lily comparisons (I would too if I were her), but the similarities between the two artists are pretty much inevitable. Now I don't want to say that "Made of Bricks" isn't a good album, because it's a delight actually. The only problem is that by now it feels as if it's been done before. There's nothing exceptionally fresh or innovative about it, rather just a collection of acid-tongued girl pop songs that make you fall in love with the girl behind them. So yeah, if you're looking for something that'll blow your mind, this album isn't it. If you're looking for something fun and catchy and occasionally hilarious, Kate Nash is your girl. And the good news is that I think she's got much more versatility and strength than Lily Allen does, who will probably turn in 1-2 more albums before retiring from music. So let's look at Kate Nash like the wave of the future, shall we? Her albums will hopefully only get better with time and experience.
