Futurecast: 6-20-08

Another edition of Futurecast this Friday, in place of the standard Live Friday, which happens from time to time. Futurecast, if you've never heard of it before, is the segment in which I get a little farther ahead of the game and talk about music that's not quite in stores just yet. Today we can say I'm sort of cheating in terms of the Futurecast definition, but I hope you won't hold it against me.
First up, something new from the 2nd Broken Social Scene Presents: offshoot project, this time headed up by Brendan Canning. If you recall, last year Kevin Drew released "Spirit If..." to some pretty good acclaim (yours truly included), and now we get "Something for All of Us." Similar to "Spirit If..." this record is still reminiscent of the fully-formed Broken Social Scene, under a sound that was established with albums like "Feel Good Lost" and the remarkable "You Forgot It In People." The difference on "Something for All of Us" is that there's more of an emphasis on atmospherics than dynamics, making it a quieter and less driven affair than Kevin Drew's effort. I'm not going to get any further into it because I'll have a full review upon the physical CD release about 1 month from now (July 22nd). But for those of you who don't want to wait that long and get your music digitally anyways, you can buy the mp3s right now from Arts and Crafts. Click this link to do that. Here's a couple sample songs for you:

I'm sorry I don't know what I have to do to get an upside down exclamation point when mentioning Forward Russia. I'm not even going to put the normal exclamation point after the band's name either. Sorry, grammatical perfectionists and extreme fans of the band. That said, Forward Russia has a new album called "Life Processes" which gets a U.S. release on July 22nd. You can get it in stores if you live in most foreign countries. Here the band moves away from the numbered song titles and pretty much rocks out harder than ever. Lots of punk ethos and math rock elements across "Life Processes" along with some fascinating softer piano-driven cuts. Those who've never heard of the band may be pleasantly surprised.
