Live Friday: 8-15-08

Today's Live Friday features the return of old favorites The Hold Steady. As they've got a new album out this year and are currsntly touring to promote it, they happened to make a pit stop at WXPN to play some songs off of "Stay Positive." This is the second time in two albums that they've done this, though unlike last time their performance isn't in-studio acoustic. While that's somewhat tragic, seeing as how the acoustic versions of the "Boys and Girls In America" songs turned out so well, at least this session gives you a better impression of how the band sounds live if you've yet to see them. They're playing in front of a nice-sized crowd, but have no fear on quality issues- audience noise is minimal. If I'm making a note of one thing here, it's the fascinating way the band transitions straight from "Constructive Summer" into "Hot Soft Lights" like it's completely natural. Have a listen and find out for yourselves.
